Ok so Randy Couture isn't really so much of a grinch as he is a stand-up guy but regardless...pretty great costume.

Nasty Nasty Nasty Injury

If you were unaware, last night the UFC had a full fight card on Spike TV and in one of the undercard fights the above injury occurred. The guy's name is Corey Hill and he is 6'4'' and fights at 155lbs. The average height of guys in the Lightweight class is probably around 5'8''. Now this isn't the first time that a guy has broken a leg this way and unfortunately, it won't be the last but you have to wonder if this guy's ridiculous height/weight ratio might have made this worse than it would have been with a 5'8'' guy.

I don't know enough about anatomy to say much about this except that if I knew this guy I would have begged him to move up a weight class. His legs are so long that he's still an obvious target for leg kicks even at 170lbs, so why not move up to welterweight and use the extra weight to bulk up his leg muscles to protect those giraffe-like legs? He still would have a huge height advantage at 170lbs so whats the point? Also, as you go up in weight class, guys generally get a little slower which only could have helped Corey in his boxing. I'm not saying this wouldn't have happened if he was heavier but it's hard to look at him and not suspect that he was at a much higher risk for sustaining such an injury than other guys.

Having said all this stuff about Hill's ability to take a leg kick, I must note that it wasn't his opponent who threw the leg kick in this instance. The injury actually occurred on a leg kick by Corey Hill which means (as you can also see in the picture) that the contact point was the shin, where there is very little muscle on any person, no matter how big they are. But that really doesn't change anything because as I understand it, your bone mass increases as your body mass increases so if he was heavier his shin bone would be bigger, more massive idk the correct terminology but point is that it would have been harder to break.

I know I went on a bit of a rant here but I just feel like this may have been avoidable and now this guy is probably worrying about the next time he will walk when it's possible that as a welterweight he could be worrying about his next fight instead. And dont worry, I realize that in order for anyone to read this I'm gonna have to post it on some other blog but let me have my kicks. (no pun intended)

If you want to see a video of the fight and probably a little footage of Joe Rogan screaming "STOP THE FIGHT!!!" for a few seconds before anyone realizes what happened it's on the front page of UFC.com.

Jens Pulver moves back up from #8 to #4 due to me coming to my senses about him and remembering his destruction of Cub Swanson...I realize that Pulver's good stand-up skills are still enough to overwhelm most of the weight class and combining that with the fact that he's solid on the ground and his wealth of experience caused me to bump him up.
Any other changes are just a result of these three changes...
Note: Wagnney Fabiano and Akitoshi Tamura's positions would have stayed the same without Pulver's move up -- both guys showed that they belong in the upper half of the rankings but didn't show me enough for me to justify a move up.

Dec. 3rd Lineup/Upcoming "Fight Nights" and The Ultimate Fighter Semi-Finals Preview

This week is the first of a number of very busy/awesome weeks for MMA fans we can look forward to in the coming two months or so. Tomorrow (Wed.) is packed full of MMA with WEC 37 @ 8pm on Versus and back to back new episodes of The Ultimate Fighter: Season 8 on Spike at 12am and 1am--six straight hours of MMA...

WEC 37 is headlined by a Bantamweight Title fight between current champ Miquel Torres (left) and Manny Tapia and is filled with awesome fights. Needless to say, I'll preview this card later today/tomorrow.


Since the UFC and WEC brands are both under the Zuffa, LLC umbrella, The Ultimate Fighter episodes are being shown late so as not take viewers away from WEC 37. Spike will make up for the lack of a new episode last week by showing two new episodes of the show. A story on Spike.com states that each episode will feature two fights (typically there is one fight) which means that the season finale matchups will be set by the end of the second episode, as the number of fighters drops from 8 to 4 (two 155'ers and two 205'ers).

Wednesday is a great day to start watching the show if you haven't seen it before given the number and quality of fights featured and the fact that it's likely that the winners of these matches (and maybe a couple losers) will end up fighting in the UFC in the future, even if they don't actually win the final match. Along those lines, there is a rumor that Junie Browning (right) gets kicked off the show in the second episode due to another "incident" but even if that is true, I am 100% sure that Junie has or will have a contract with the UFC (see Dana White's video blog from UFC 91).
Look for:

• Light Hvy: Ryan Bader over Eliot Marshall in the first episode
• Lightweight: Phillipe Nover over George Roop by utter obliteration in episode 1
• A battle between 205'ers Vinny Magalhaes and Krzysztof Soszynski--can't say who will win
• Bedlam from Junie Browning that will lead to another visit from UFC President Dana White
• Dana giving Junie yet another chance
• Junie to make quick work of Efrain Escudero--possibly a KO

DC MMA: Take Two

Two bits of DC area MMA news in 24 hours...I thought it was impossible. I don't know how this one slipped by me but apparently the DC area will host another mixed martial arts event on December 13th at the DC Armory. The show is called "Battle at the Nation's Capital" and is being put on by District Combat Productions.

Admittedly, I have never heard of District Combat Productions but a visit to their website and Sherdog.com's announcement of the event actually gave me some good insight. First of all, the promotion is brand new and founded by Geoff Dawson, owner of Bedrock Management and Jonathan Reff, an Olympic Taekwondo fighter and trainer at Somafit in DC. (Note: For those familiar with the DC area, Bedrock Mgmt owns Buffalo Billiards and Atomic Billiards near the Uptown). http://bizjournalshire.com/washington/stories/2006/05/22/story7.html

In general, this event is unlikely to be at the same level as the UWC events but fight card does feature a few interesting fighters most of whom are either unproven or new to the sport, such as former Cornell wrestler John Cholish. The one name that did stick out to me right away was Paul Bradley. Bradley is a former Ohio State wrestler (apparently was dirrty) and a contestant on season 7 of The Ultimate Fighter (ended July '08) who won his first fight but was eventually forced off the show after a contagious rash was discovered on his neck.

Tickets for the event are available at ticketmaster.com and range from $30-175. I will most likely be back in DC by the 13th, so I definitely plan to attend. Hopefully it will be possible to get some of the better tickets for cheap outside the armory but I don't know for sure. I will definitely write more about this event in the coming weeks as I learn more about it, so stay tuned.

Big DC Area MMA News

It was just announced today that the co-main event at UWC: Man "O" War on February 21st at the Patriot Center at GMU will be a Bantamweight (135lbs) title bout between Mike Easton and Chase Beebe for the UWC Bantamweight Belt. Mike Easton is a local guy who fighting out of Temple Hills, MD and is 2-0 in the UWC and has a 6-1 career record. Chase Beebe is the big story here. Beebe is a former WEC Bantamweight Champion which is basically the equivalent of being UFC champion for 135'ers and is currently the #10 ranked Bantamweight in the world by Sherdog.com. **This is definitely the biggest MMA fight ever in the DC area and is going to really legitimize the UWC on a national level.

Ultimate Warrior Challenge (UWC) is owned and run by Marcello Foran whose brother was a standout wrestler at Dematha in the early 90's and currently fights in the UWC.

Hopefully the additional media attention that this fight is getting will discourage Mike Easton from wearing briefs/a speedo in this fight...

UFC 92 Promo--Get Ready This Is Gonna Be LEGIT

Urijah Faber-Jens Pulver II/WEC Featherweight Rankings

According to a report from mmaweekly.com, Urijah Faber vs Jens Pulver II has been set for WEC 38 on January 25th. I am personally very disappointed to hear this because Jens has slipped so far down in the featherweight rankings (according to my WEC featherweight rankings) due to the beatdown he took against Leonard Garcia, that a win against him wouldn't really say anything for Urijah. The whole idea about this matchup is that their first match drew 1.2 million viewers, the largest TV audience the WEC has ever had. It really sucks when these fights are determined by money and not talent...The original word was that Urijah would be facing Jose Aldo, an up and coming Brazilian who is 2-0 so far during his time in the WEC. A win against Aldo would have meant a lot more for Urijah.

Speaking of those rankings, here is my current list (just for the WEC) given the recent events at WEC 36:

UFC 91 Fight in the Crowd

WOW. This is pretty ridiculous. Thanks to a recent post at bloodyelbow.com I came across this video. So this happened at UFC 91 on November 15th right after the main event ended (you can hear Brock Lesnar being announced as the winner over Randy Couture). Check out the massive throw/toss/body slammage one of the policemen puts on on some dude at 30 seconds--that is vicious...to UFC President Dana White I say, as former Orioles PA announcer Rex Barney once said, "GIVE THAT MAN.... a contract!".

Now this is funny whether you like MMA or not...

Akihiro Gono Entrance-Prepare for this

I didn't realize how much unbelievable stuff I see regarding this sport until today. Akihiro Gono was just announced to fight Jon Fitch at 170lbs at UFC 94: Penn-St. Pierre II. Gono has had a reputation for ridiculous/amazing entrances since his days back in Japan. The best part is that this fight will be on the main card so his entrance will be viewed by tons of people--live--for the first time...and they won't believe their eyes:

WEC 37-New featherweight matchup

Josh Grispi was forced to pull out of WEC 37 due to injury so the featherweight matchup that was originally supposed to be Grispi (12-1)-Diego Nunes (12-0) but now will be Cole Province (5-0) vs Diego Nunes. Cole Province is a highly successful D-II Wrestler out of Central Oklahoma who has won impressively in first 5 fights. I took a look at the one fight video of his on youtube where he submits some guy using a wrestling move...thats not supposed to happen and to be honest is more telling about Cole's opponent than him. It looked to me like Cole is all about taking his opponent down and "grounding and pounding" as its termed--check out the video, if you don't know the term you'll figure it out after about a minute. Diego Nunes is much more polished as an overall fighter than Cole and I expect this to be a short match with Nunes winning by submission.

Urijah Faber

Big news for the DC area Urijah fan club--for the first time since his tough TKO loss to Mike Brown, URIJAH SPEAKS. Haha, the word is that it looks like he'll be fighting next on January 25th, possibly in San Diego against Jose Aldo, a game opponent. I know a bit about Aldo but I haven't seen him fight in the WEC yet. I found one video of one of his fights from back in Brazil. He's 12-1 and has been pretty hyped. I'm sure I'll hear more once the fight is confirmed.

The Incredible Hulk

Brock Lesnar is a man monster. It didn't even take two full rounds for him to put away five-time UFC Champ Randy Couture. The bout was stopped in the second round due to the repeated bludgeoning of Couture's head with Lesnars cinder block fists. No joke, if the ref hadn't stepped in when he did Couture might have been eating through a tube the rest of his life. Bottom line: Brock Lesnar is the scariest thing since the Boogeyman and if you didn't know it before, you do now...

P.S. I just found out that when Lesnar actually stepped into the cage on saturday he weighed 277lbs. The day before he had to weigh 265lbs in order to make the UFC maximum weight limit. Randy Couture weighed just over 220lbs. Damn....

Featherweight (145) Info

So given the fact that Urijah just lost and with the fact that the WEC's 185 (Middleweight) and 205 (Light Heavyweight) classes have been absorbed by the UFC, the Featherweight (145) class is now crazier and more stacked than ever. On the next card there are a number of Featherweight matches that are important. One that really caught my eye was Josh Grispi vs Diego Nunes. I hadn't heard of Diego Nunes but I know that Josh Grispi is 19 and ffffffilthy. I looked up Nunes: this one could be pretty insane...the biggest highlight is at about 1:15

Amir Sadollah

Amir was the winner of last seasons Ultimate Fighter. He was supposed to fight tomorrow but had to pull out due to an infection in his leg which put him in the hospital. I found this picture on BloodyElbow.com in a post from someone at combatlifestyle.com. Notice the Skoal shot...awesome

Alright let me give you a little introduction to the fights and fighters from UFC 91 happening on Saturday Nov. 15.

Main Card
Brock Lesnar vs Randy Couture-Heavyweight Championship
Here's the lowdown: Brock Lesnar is a man beast and is downright frightening even from the couch side of the TV screen. He was a national champion wrestler at U Minnesota, was in the WWE and briefly played for the Vikings. He started mixed martial arts a year ago (about) and in his first fight fought Frank Mir, the former UFC heavyweight champion and current UFC douche-extraordinaire, and was destroying him until Mir caught him in a kneebar and made him tap. Lesnar obliterated Heath Herring in August and literally broke his face. Lesnar has to drop weight to get to 265lbs which is the max in the UFC, wears 4XL gloves, has a sick flat top and WYDOs on occasion.

Randy Couture or "Captain America" as we remember him, is 45 years old but generally is the man and cannot be overlooked. He is a 5-time UFC Champ. Thing is he's smaller than Brock but is also a great wrestler, better boxer and generally has 10000 times more experience. If I had to bet, I'd bet on Couture by decision.

Kenny Florian vs Joe Stevenson-Lightweight (155)
This fight is determines the number 1 contender for the Lightweight title. From what I've heard if Florian wins he'll fight BJ Penn for the title in May or something. Joe Stevenson just lost to BJ early in 2008 so if he wins he'll probably fight Sean Sherk who lost to BJ in march. That won't happen though, Florian will win if for no reason other than the fact that he is constantly giving the people's eyebrow without knowing it.

There is some other stuff happening on this card but I realize I'm writing a lot so if it's important I'll talk about it after the weekend.

Peruvian Necktie

Wow there is a lot of random stuff I want to post but I'm gonna have to limit how much I put up all at once so you all will actually read this.
I think first things first lets settle exactly what this mysterious peruvian necktie is. It's more than just a sweet name, trust me, I've seen it on TV....

FYI: for you clowns that I know, this actually happened this summer in July when I had people over but I was downstairs watching the Affliction PPV and this Ultimate Fighter Finale Card. This was the peruvian necktie I originally saw that sparked all of the comments you have heard come from me. SICK STUFF--> Btw this is definitely how I'm gonna say I separated Danny's shoulder at Trinity...

Herro yall

Yes, that would be a combination of Far East and Deep South. I'm Zach, if you're reading this I'd be willing to bet you don't need any introduction. The point of this blog is simple. I am a big mixed martial arts fan and I would love to be able to talk about the sport with my friends but none of them are very big fans. When we're all back at home they do partake in the occasional FIGHT NIGHT which they seem to enjoy and will watch UFC ppv's if I buy them so long as there is alcohol and HDTV involved. When it boils down to it, I kinda want a place to put what I'm thinking about in terms of the sport and I want to at least try to make relevant info accessible to my buddies without having to listen to me jabber for an hour about stuff thats over their heads.
